At the center of the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his flock of rams.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes through the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

But, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.

Tales of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One day read more he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to help but discovered no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
